How to Stay Healthy While Social Distancing

It’s the first week of April and if you’re like me, you already have three weeks of social distancing under your belt. As we’re told, we have until April 30th to return back to our normal lives. And FYI, I understand that’s a completely relative term: “normal.” We really don’t know when we can return that sense of “normalcy” so it’s important to establish healthy routines under today’s norm. My intern and I brainstormed a few ways that you can do just that…all from the comfort of your home, without a bra for all we care (who says there aren’t perks of this quarantining?)

Focus on your Nutrition!

It can be pretty difficult to stay on track with your normal eating habits when you are physically stuck inside all day. Temptations feel like they are at their peak! Our fridges feel like they are calling our names because we are in its vicinity most of the day. If this feels like you right now, do not worry, you are not alone. (I’m right there with you)

This is a great time to refer to my last blog on how to practice mindful eating. Staying in tune with your hunger cues is super important right now. I know emotions feel really intense right now, which tends to be the reason why a lot of us struggle with mindfulness around food. But here’s what I want you to do instead: take a deep breath and remember: you are powerful …and it’s totally okay to not eat “perfectly” (whatever that means) right now.

If you’re needing inspo for balanced plant-based recipes, check out my online community, Shine: A Soulistic Wellness Hub! Every week, you’re provided with two new plant-based recipes. They’re quick, tasty and you don’t have to worry about the guesswork of ensuring they’re balanced. On Shine, you will also find posts made to encourage and motivate you to find your best self through mindfulness and spiritual wellness.

Move that Body!

Working out from home can be great option for some, while it proves to be difficult for others, due to a lack of structure and equipment. If you are someone who finds it difficult- do not fear! I am here to tell you that you have many resources to guide and motivate you to get your body moving. We have to remember that our bodies literally crave movement and the release of endorphins, which is why it is important to keep our bodies active. My community Shine also offers a selection of yoga videos, but here are a few resources I’ve been utilizing:

A great app to download for all the fitness you want is ClassPass. The amazing thing about this app is that it is FREE and gives you unlimited access to 2,000 on-demand workouts. The workouts include all different types of movement- from hardcore boot camps to slow flow yoga. ClassPass also has you choose your preferred workouts and the times you usually workout and filters through different workouts to best suit how you love to move! The app does have the option to join live stream classes with the top studios and instructors from around the world, which does cost money, but it is well worth it if you are willing to purchase that aspect of the app. And once quarantining is over, you can utilize the app to check out all the local studios in your area. (#supportlocalbusiness) I highly recommend this for those of you who travel a lot for work, as you can change your zip code with the app!

  • Seeking a personal trainer from home?

I know a guy! My husband is offering customized workout plans for just $50! You’ll have access to him through an app where he will design a workout based off your goals and equipment available. The workouts are linked to demonstration videos so you know how to perform the moves safely and effectively. Send him an email at kevincarrillo032@gmail.com to get started!

  • YOUTUBE FITNESS

To be honest, if I don’t use ClassPass, I workout from home with YouTube! I gave up my gym membership last year and have loved working out on my balcony using my laptop or phone. Another great option for those of you who travel (pre and post quarantine, of course!). Some channels I recommend are:

    • HASfit, they’re a little cheesy but their workouts are great for all levels!

    • LoveSweatFitness, they’re 5 min workout videos that she recommends doing 4x for a full 20-min workout.

    • Yoga with Adrienne, this is a great channel for those wanting to explore your yoga practice for free

    • Sydney Cummings, you’ll need some equipment for her workouts but if you’re someone who likes to lift, Sydney is your girl.

    • PopSugar Fitness, they have everything from dancing workouts to celebrity trainers on their channel. Most videos are under 45 minutes!

  • FITBOD APP

If you want a personal experience from the comfort of your own home, you can input the equipment you have available and the specific areas you want to tone and this app will create you a free workout! You can try out this app for free and then it’s just $10/mo from there!

Don’t forget to pause.

Give yourself grace during this time. The world feels upside down and uncertain. Remember to spend time with your thoughts and emotions and stay rooted in yourself. Create fun meals, take walks, explore new workouts, meditate, spend time with your babies (furry or human kind) or try out a new healing modality like breathwork or online reiki! Do the things that give you peace, maybe that’s what we could all use?

Eclectic Wellness and Shine are here for you and are working hard to provide beneficial posts, blogs, recipes, etc to best push you to be your best right now.

Wishing joy and wellness to all of you during this time.
